What's in a name?

We are putting new laminate flooring
in our living room
(Too many kitty barf stains on my living room carpet!)
and hence have to change the old laminate in our
computer room and two bedrooms.

But you know new flooring means
a fresh coat of paint on all the walls.

How on Earth is a person supposed to
pick a new paint color now-a-days??

How can there be over a
1000 shades of beige, grey and green?

I've spent $85 on 11 different sample colors...

and I'm technically still undecided

and who names all these colors?
grass cloth
jungle trail
subtle touch
khaki sun
juliet's potion
gentle rain
brookside moss
forest moss
spring moss
new moss
river moss
barren plain
taos taupe
warm taupe
calm taupe
toasty grey
horseshoe grey
silver shores
silver lining
silver fox...

silver fox?

this does not look like silver fox
it looks like a light chocolate brown...

I confess...
I tried a sample of silver fox
because that's what I call Stanley sometimes... :)

Enjoy your new floor but I feel sorry for Banjo as he is not going to like it very much. Skipper can't get a lot of traction on our wooden floors! lol Silver fox looks like a lovely colour, have fun! Hugs Anesha and Skipper.

The floor will look great once it's done. :-)

Good luck with the paint colours. I dithered for over a year before redoing my bedroom this spring, but finally decided on Para Paints' "Green Tea."

BTW, Para Paints is the BEST paint I've worked with, and while I've not used a lot of brands, I've used Behr, CIL, Martha Stewart and Canadian Tire's own brand, probably one or two others over the years.

Of course you'll post photos when the work is done, right? :-)

How about good ol' white? Is there even such a thing any more? Happy painting. :)

if you were married to my hubby you would not have the paint problem, he refuses to have any color on the wall other than white. what i want to know is why there are 50 colors of white? and what color is inukshuk i really need to know if that is a new color of WHITE... LOL i am also trying to talk Hubby into laminate wood floors for the same reason except it is dog upchuck not cat

Wouldn't it be a fun job to name those colors?!

I'm not a fan of carpet - especially with animals. You'll love your new laminate. As for the wall colours...I feel your pain in the pocket book. I've done much the same - in fact, before you buy another sample pot call me - I may already have it. I was eyeing up the Silver Fox too - the paint colour, not Stanley. *grin* Good luck!!

That is a big bunch of very own Wall Mart!

I hate rugs/carpet - total germ factories and I have had two abodes painted the one and only color for me - Banana Creme...just makes me happy.

oh, you made me laugh! :)

Best of luck choosing a color. I am the worst at that. I have asked my hubby to install laminate flooring in our 5th wheel. I haven't convinced him yet. I have that same problem with the cat stains on my carpet..

I can't wait to see how it looks when your done..

Our guest room is still polka dotted from all the samples I put on trying to find the right color! I gave up on greys after trying to find a greyish purple. Impossible! I like the Silver Fox color!

Tamago said...

Oh what a hard decision you have to make! There are too many options and also, these colors look different in different lights!
I'm amazed there are so many moss colors...haha. Maybe it's easier to decide based on the name, like silver fox :-)
I hope you find the best color!

BumbleVee said...

Oh, yeh! Stanley's a fox!

We finally used Russian Olive for our walls...but, cut it 25% so it was lighter.... they will mix it lighter for you.... if you find a colour you like but it is still too dark....

I vote for the silver fox....he's been good for you up to this point. Don't tempt fate.

I thought there were only two greens in SK....rough rider green and Innovation. Who knew?

Have fun,

Dearest Catherine,
Oh my, you have quite a task to do. We did this for the outside of our home. Pieter being color blind, it all came to me and indeed, reading the names they invented, does not make any sense. Were they sober when they did that? Or over worked with these endless different colors?
I was lucky for being outside in daylight on our balcony when I selected them. On paper indoors it is still misleading.
We went from cotton/wool carpet to ALL oak planks and that was before we ended up having 7 and 8 cats... SO glad we did!

Good luck!

hee hee hee.... and what does Stanley call you??

Well it will be wonderful after the paint is picked out - I hate that part of it. sandie

Duke was the reason we replaced our carpeting with laminate flooring. And you're right, new floors = new paint on the walls. I couldn't decide and just went with antique white everywhere.

Laurie said...

I know Catherine, my eyes glaze over whenever I go to the paint aisle! Let us know the final decision. I'm with you on the flooring, as long as we have cats and dogs, carpeting is out of the question!

Debra Taylor said...

Wow that decision-making process looks so very overwhelming! I agree with you on the assessment of the "silver fox"

It took forever for me to find a good tan and red for my walls!!! too many choices and finally I had the red mixed! lol good luck!

Betsy Adams said...

Holy Cow---so many choices... I really don't like that... It's the same when I go grocery shopping. When I want Paper Towels, I just want Paper Towels---not 50 different choices.... Gads!!!!

Hope you picked out some pretty colors after all was said and done.... I'm not sure I would have ever gone through all of that.... Just give me something that is 'off-white'.... ha ha

Was it easy to choose the laminate colour? I have laminate in my bedroom because I could no longer sleep with all the kitty barf stains.

Fisher and Staff said...

It is so hard to make these kinds of choices. I always try to remember it isn't permanent. I usually never change it anyway.

New floors will be great.
Colors, I laughed. There are really so much the specific names of :-)

Me and Dad, well, the other furs too, just went through the paint carpet thing. Of course right after it was finished Dad was thinking: "Hmmm, maybe laminate or"

We no longer have carpet due to us cats and Mom's allergies. It is fun sliding on the laminate! Hard to turn corners tho. Good luck with the paint colors!!!!

Eileen said...

Laminate is nice, the cats still throw up on it, but much easier to clean up! I still carpet in my bedroom and basement...I'll replace them before I move out.

Good luck with the color choice. I always what I decide on in the store looks different at home, I'm too cheap to buy samples.

This place was painted just three years ago before we moved in, so not happening here for awhile.

Have fun!

the last couple of times I picked out colors of paint I picked the general color and then picked a name that I could live with.. my white was 'lambs wool' and my brown was caramel something or other..

Mary said...

Wow! That is a lot of names for grey! And green. I'd be confused! I found out last year that there are at least a dozen shades of white! White? Lol. Keep us posted on your choices! :)

Dearest Catherine,
Wishing your Stanley a happy belated Birthday!

This is exactly how Mrs. T got a wooden floor in our living room. A puppy in late fall learning to be house broken and an uncooperative lead to alternative to the stained rug. I think a new puppy will be held off till next spring...

This is hell but you make it fun and exciting. I have done this a few times. Hope Im done for a while. Loved the photos.

Romeo said...

Oh dear. Yes, yes and yes. Yes to how many different shades could there possibly be. Yes to really? Where do they get these names from? And yes, to replacing the flooring....oh dear the walls need to be painted. I do hope that Banjo doesn't wear himself out in the initial run ;) Romeo survived, although frequent naps were a must. I am sure that given the proper coaching, Banjo too will come out of all this just fine ;) Maybe with a few paint splats but just fine none the less! Anxious to see the results!
