The Long and Short of It

The Short Story:
Technology ruined my love of reading.

The Long Story:
I used to read for pleasure
even as a young girl
every Nancy Drew mystery
devoured and savoured
taking me away to an adventure

as I got older
my taste in books changed
but I still enjoyed reading
even through the tedious 'must read classics' for school
(please let William Shakespeare rest in peace...)

then came technology
emails
texting
instant messaging
the demand and expectations for IMMEDIATE replies

and now paper replaced by electronic media
much better for the environment
(though much harder to lay in the bathtub to read)
and truly not much cheaper to purchase
what's up with that?

I haven't read for pleasure for years
I can't remember the last book I read
I downloaded a book onto my ipad
almost 2 years ago and am stopped at chapter 3
it's an interesting book but...

it takes too much reading to read a book
remember 'back in the day' when we used to be
so excited to receive a written letter?
eager for communication we would linger over each word
savouring the the pages...

OK...I don't really remember that
but I do watch a lot of Jane Austen movies
written words were cherished back then
now there are emails, texting, instant messaging
thousands of short messages creating shorter attention spans

I cringe when someone asks me for my cell phone number
why do you need that? my cell is for emergency purposes only
I have a home phone number you know
oh...actually I don't really like talking on the phone...
face-to-face conversation is a lost art...

my most unfavorite? texting
I hate texting - can't stand it - try to avoid it
the demand for an instant reply - unbearable
OK...yes...please feel free to continue sending me
via text messaging funny cat photos

but sending cat photos is different isn't it?
a necessity if you will...
and no reading needed
unless it's lolcats - don't send me lolcats
too much reading - why would a cat want 'cheezburgers'?

this post is now much too long for me to have to re-read
to check my spelling and grammar - so I won't
I have to save the rest of my attention span
to catch up on my blog reading
clearly audio books are my only hope...

April Shower Promises

I am very much hoping
that these April showers
are going to bring me May flowers...

I do not mind the rain in April.
Especially if the results for May are
green grass
apple blossoms
johnny jump-ups
the continuing return of summer birds...

Wishing you a wonderful last week of April!

A Cat Tongue Lashing

Honestly Banjo...
you have been cleaning yourself
for over 20 minutes now...

there is not a square inch of you
that has not been groomed...

really...how dirty can a
completely indoor cat get?

you aren't outside
rolling in the dirt...

you are in the house
all day...

oh...
haha...
errrr...
*blush*

guess I best clean my floors this weekend...

I'm Home

I have lived in all 3 prairie provinces of Canada.

I was born in Manitoba,
moved with my family to Alberta
and then to Saskatchewan
moved back to Manitoba to marry Wayne
intended to move back to Alberta
but stopped in Saskatchewan over 25 years ago
and stayed...

Although I would move to Alberta in a minute
in the light of day, Saskatchewan just feels right to me.

We spent the weekend in Calgary, Alberta
and even though I love the shopping, restaurants, mountain views
and the chance to visit friends and relatives
what I miss about home when I am in Alberta is:
  • that in 'rush hour traffic' it only takes me 6 minutes to get home
  • that Saskatchewan is the 'sunshine capital" of Canada
  • that we seem to be in less of a hurry to get somewhere when driving
  • that we do not participate in day-light savings
what I miss about home when I am in Manitoba is:
  • everything

Of course, having visited a few different places in British Columbia, but never having lived there, I must admit...I wouldn't mind experiencing living there for awhile.  I think that is why one of the things on my 'bucket list' is to visit every province in Canada.  I think it's important to be well versed in your home country.  In the end, it's important to have pride in your home, otherwise, why live there - right?

even if you have a new home that has nicer wallpaper
and a more efficient dishwasher." ~  Lemony Snicket

Start at the ears and make your way down..

Easter weekend...already?

Banjo and I wish you
a most wonderful Easter weekend.

And remember,
bunny ears are delicious!

Only when they are of
the chocolate variety of course...

Laundry and Other Amazing Things

I'm always amazed by people
who on Monday morning back to work
talk about all the exciting and ambitious
things they did on the weekend...

Ted "I volunteered at the homeless shelter all weekend."
Carol "I cooked a 5 course meal for 50 relatives on Sunday."
Sally "I ran a 10k marathon and taught a yoga class."
Bill "I built a new deck and resided the house."

Me "errr...I did my laundry.  With
a little luck I'll have it out of the basket and
hung up in my closet by Wednesday..."

Hope your weekend was a productive one.

Got Spring?

Please forgive my absence...
I've been out enjoying spring.

morning drive photoshoots with Stanley
(I have a small window of opportunity between the
end of hockey and the beginning of golf)
brisk afternoon walks with no coat needed
listening to the birds twitterpating
drunk from eating fermented fruit

Welcome Spring...
so glad you could make it relatively on time this year.

first spring day is another.  The difference between them
is sometimes as great as a month." ~ Henry Van Dyke

April Thoughts

Hello April!
So happy to see you again!

April holds thoughts of:
  • mittens in the morning, jackets off in afternoon
  • snow birds returning
  • those last teases of winter
  • tulips and hostas peeking through the dirt
  • the Easter bunny leaving sweet surprises
  • braving a sleeveless dress
Wishing you a warm and sunny month of April!

"In spring I have counted one hundred and thirty six different kinds of weather
inside of four and twenty hours." ~ Mark Twain
