Breaking Free

The garden woke up this weekend...

breaking free from the long winter months...

garden trinkets left out in the elements...

now soaking up the sunshine...

bugs starting to stir...

much yard work needing to be done...

but Stanley shirks his yard work duties for his golf clubs...

yup...

spring is officially here...

Now THAT's What I Call FUN!

Don't you LOVE it when you have one of those
extra terrific weekends?

Saturday morning I went out to the house of
my new friend Carolynn from A Glowing Ember who
moved to an acreage just outside of Swift Current
late last year from British Columbia.

After a tour of her lovely home,
a most scrumptious brunch,
a quick introduction to her adorable kitty,
and a little play time with her enthusiastic pup,
her and I went to the
"Discover the Farm, Poultry and Exotic Animal Sale"
that was held in the city.

Two kindred spirits
sharing the same joy of animals,
cameras in hand,
wondering if our hubbies would notice
if a couple of
fuzzy, furry, squeaky, squawky
or four legged bundles of delight
happened to follow us home...

Just a small sampling of what we
saw, touched and coveted...

Could baby pigs be any darn cuter???

Thank you Carolynn
for a most enjoyable Saturday morning!

10 Seconds of Obliviousness

Don't you LOVE those
first 10 seconds of OBLIVIOUSNESS
when you first wake up
and all your thoughts, worries and stresses
from the day before haven't yet
popped back into your mind
to GREY out your HAPPY feelings...??

and then you remember it's FRIDAY
and that greyness in your brain
starts to break up a little
to let a small stream of
happiness and hope back in....

Happy Friday!

It's What's Inside That Counts

My early childhood was spent living in a tiny farm house (not this one but certainly no bigger).  I have never lived in anything anyone would consider a large house.  The house we own right now is 1020 sq ft.  Small.  Below average.  (Average being 2250 sq ft from 2011 statistics for Canada and U.S.)

I see some of these new big beautiful homes being built and I am envious and think that perhaps we should sell ours and buy something bigger.  But then I remember that our mortgage will be paid off soon and that I could retire in a smaller cozy home or keep working for another 20 years in order to pay off the mortgage on a big new beautiful home.

Besides, it's not the size of the home that matters, it's the amount of love that is inside it right?

Plus...I can't keep the dust bunnies tamed in my house now, what would I do if I had a bigger one???

Now don't get me wrong, if the opportunity ever arrived where we could buy a big new home but not have a huge mortgage with it, I would totally jump at it. I would just make sure I could also hire a maid to dust once a week.  ;)

What's a girl and her cat to do?

"I feel pretty
oh so pretty
I feel pretty and witty and bright
and I pity any kitty who isn't me tonight.

I feel charming
oh so charming
it's alarming how charming I feel
and so pretty that I hardly can believe I'm real.

See the pretty kitty in that mirror there
Who can that attractive cat be?

Such a pretty face
Such a pretty nose
Such a pretty smile

Such a pretty me!"

It's snowing and blowing out
weekend plans of leaving the city changed.

Wayne's playing hockey all weekend.
Kurtis is working.

Banjo and I are watching musicals together...

Can you tell?

One Less Thing

When you are a chronic worrier such as myself
it's good when you can take something off your
list of things to worry about.

Today I officially take "Global Warming" off my list.

Gosh...that makes me feel better...

Have a Happy Day!

This is Ridiculous

Just as we started thinking spring was upon us
it snowed yesterday...

the robins are wondering
where spring went...

they are puffing up
trying to stay warm...

luckily there are some
left over berries on the trees...

what had teases of green
is once again covered in white...

the bunny tries to stay warm
cuddled underneath the cedars...

he gives old man winter
the one eared salute...
since he does not have hands and fingers...
if you know what I mean... :)

the weather is inconsequential to
indoor kitties....

but for us humans
and outdoor critters
this has become ridiculous...

Kiss My Skinny...Ankles

If you have no time to read today,
this is the moral of my post...

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them."
~ Mother Teresa

But if you have a moment to sit back and read for a moment, carry on:

Except for about 2 years in my early 20's, I have struggled with weight all my life. Due to a number of health complications, on April 1 2011, I started on a quest to get healthy.  And healthy I am.  60 lbs off of these 48 year old bones.  Size 14 to size 4.   And while I have lost weight, I have gained some valuable insight.

Please note that all of the following is only MY OPINION!  :)

Things I have learned in the last year:
  • When you are slimmer, people are nicer to you.  I've had more doors held open for me, by men and women, than I even had when I was pregnant.  People pay more attention to you.  Smile at you more.
  • The slimmer you are, the more clothes you can buy on sale.  As the average sized woman in Canada and the US is size 12, that leaves lots of smaller sized clothes that go on sale.
  • Weight does not come off your knees and if you have thick ankles, you will still have thick ankles...what's up with that?
  • When you have lost weight, people watch what you are eating with 'eagle eyes'.  It's like they are waiting for you to 'slip' up.
  • When you have lost weight, people tell you how to lose weight...(weird right?)  "You shouldn't eat so much fruit, it's so high in sugar."  Ummm...well it seems to be working for me so thanks for your advice but...
  • When you have lost weight, people expect you to gain it back.  And the sad part is, when you have struggled with your weight all your life, you are petrified that you will gain it back too.  But you have to believe in your mind (even more than in your heart) that the healthy eating and exercise is your new way of life.  I know I am worth the 30 - 45 minutes a day I put into exercising.
But there is one thing that has not changed:

  • No matter your size, people still judge you.  They judge you and they give you their opinion of your size, solicited or not.
When you are heavier, people, even complete strangers, will make comments about what you look like and what you are eating. I had a customer who always called me 'chubby'.  "How's Chubby today?"  This is just as insulting as calling me 'fat' you ignorant #@!#@!  A few short months before I started losing weight, I had a clerk in a store refer to me to another co-worker as 'the big one' when pointing me out.  I could go on and on but this post is getting long enough and I still have my point to make.

A few weeks ago I had someone say to me, and not in a nice way, "OMG, you are way too skinny! You need to put weight on!"  Ummm....kiss my skinny a** sweetie...

Now for the record - IN MY OPINION ONLY - being told you are too skinny is not as hurtful as being told you are too fat.  Though - I am sure the novelty of being called skinny would wear off after awhile too.

But I would suggest society in general tolerates skinny people much more than fat people.  Who do you see in magazines, internet ads and on TV more?  Thin people or heavy people?  (I read the other day that size 6 women are considered 'plus size' models....WTF????)

So the moral of my long-winded post is that no matter your size, people are still going to judge you.  If you are happy the size that you are, then hold your head up and walk proud.  If you are not happy the size that you are, then change it.  Either way, do it for yourself and ignore all those 'special' people that will grace you with their comments, opinion and judgement.

Love yourself.

xo Catherine
