This One Is For You Jane...

Saturday afternoon it was HOT out.
In the middle of my neighbour's lawn
sat a tiny baby sparrow.

Still with his pin feathers,
eyes hardly open,
right eye a bit 'wonky'.
(Blind in one eye perhaps?)

There were only two choices:
leave him there
(to fry in the sun or to be eaten by a neighbourhood cat)
or
rescue him.

Well you know I had to rescue him.
(No matter that there are millions of sparrows.)

So I carried him to the shade of my garden arbor,
nestled him between two plant pots,
and supplied him with some water and bird seed.

I checked on him throughout the afternoon.
He seemed to perk up
and before the end of the day,
there were a few more sparrows that joined him.
(His parents perhaps???)
Before I knew it, he had flown off.

Sunday morning
while out surveying my weed filled lawn,
who should fly out of nowhere
and land at my feet?

Baby bird!!
(I know it was him by the same
pin feathers and his 'wonky' right eye.)

He chirped at me and
I talked to him and pet him for about 5 minutes.
He then flew back up into my apple tree.

Well ya' just know *Jane Hathaway would be pleased with me...

And you have to be of a certain age to understand that reference.

You made a very grateful little friend Catherine, what a precious story! What a sweet little bird. Loved Jane Hathaway's birding outfit, that show brought a lot of laughs in my younger days with the ceement pond and the table with the fancy pot passers!

Dearest Catherine,
What a sweet story about GRATITUDE! Many humans could learn from your baby bird! Who knows what went on, it might have been dizzy, not quite fed 'enough' to use its wings. And here comes this kind hula-hooping human 'Mama' that perks him up.
Hugs,
Mariette

We had no ida what that Jane reference was all about. When we reached the end of the post, Mom then explained it to us. She is of a certain age. We are not certain what that age is, but we know it is really, really old. Mom says that we must tell you that we are sure you are not nearly as old as she is. What a grateful and lucky little sparrow. Yes I remember Jane, wonder if she ever married the banker ( I think it was the bank manager) she was in love with?

Wow! Twice I have experienced birds flying into my patio sliding glass door. Finally, I placed a large white "X" with tape and this seems to be a beacon to guide birds away from harm. So glad you reached out to save this bird! ;)
