Keeping December Low Key

I usually try to keep December as 'low key' as possible and not get caught up in all the shopping, parties, baking, cleaning, obligations, etc.

I only have a few people to buy for.  And presents are kept small and inexpensive.

I had my two co-workers/friends over for drinks and munchies Thursday evening - Wayne's Office Christmas party Friday - and a fun evening with another couple Saturday.

And then it's always just me, hubby, son and kitty for Christmas.  Turkey, Cranberries, Buns, Veggie.  No stuffing, no gravy, no potatoes, no salads, no pies, no hours of cooking.

And as it's only us, there's only so clean my house has to be!  :)

Last week I received a lovely flower arrangement adorned with a cute little owl from a co-worker / friend from another branch. I can not explain how touched I was by her thoughtfulness.

Baking is done.  We each chose one favourite:
  • Me - White Chocolate Craisen Peppermint Shortbread
  • Wayne - Peanut Butter Marshmallow Squares
  • Kurtis - Skor Cream Cheese Dip

I did not beat myself up that I sent out store bought Christmas cards instead of hand-made ones this year.  There just wasn't time.  And these pretty little, simple cards were calling my name!

And in the spirit of keeping the month of December stress free and simple - I will be taking a little blog break.  I will be back next Monday, just in time for Christmas!

Wishing you a sweet and simple week that makes you smile!

Photo Shoot Fail

Well here's a little hint for you...

Don't put hot chocolate in a mason jar and then set it in the snow to take photos.
  1. The snow melts
  2. The jar cracks
  3. The hot chocolate spills out and freezes onto your deck
(Not one of my brightest moments...)

Well...that's going to be a bit of a mess for you to clean up come spring Stanley...

Sweet Temptations

Oh the temptations of the season...

Christmas cookies are calling my name...

But I can't start yet!

12 noon Christmas Eve until noon Boxing Day
all food will equal
ZERO points in Weight Watchers...  ;)

Looking forward to:
Ginger Snaps
and
Short Bread
My 'MUST HAVE' Christmas cookies.

Luckily, it was Peanut Butter Cookies
that I baked this past weekend
(yuck...hate peanut butter cookies)
so they do not tempt me at all.

Do you have any 'must have' holiday season favorite foods?

Finding My Way

Geesh...
I was going the wrong direction there for awhile.

Lost my way.
Lost my focus.
Lost my soul.

"Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard."
~ Anne Sexton

I listened.
It was screaming.

It's good to be heading the right direction again.
Health.
Family.
Joy.

"Hello ME!
Glad you're on your way back!"

What does it take?

When there is a high windchill warning out
of -47c (-52F), it takes

3 cups of tea
2 fuzzy blankets
and a big kitty
to keep your toeas warm....

and one of those fuzzy blankets
must be an electric one... :)

Staying under the covers today.

Happy Saturday!

Cat's Log: Winter...Day 19

Cat's Log:

Earth Date December 4, 2013
Winter...Day 19

A storm hit across the Prairies Sunday evening starting with freezing rain and then turning into snow by Monday. It snowed all day.  Snow now lay on top of ice.

In the wee hours of the morning Tuesday, I went outside to shovel myself out of the driveway.  It took 45 minutes of shoveling to get my vehicle out of the driveway.

By Tuesday afternoon, Wire Kitty had all but disappeared under the snow.  I fear for his safety.

Today, leaving before daylight with a wind chill of -36c (-33F), I ventured out onto the highway with only my XL Tim Horton's Steeped Tea and an ipod full of Christmas music to keep me company.  A one woman expedition that only the truly stupid brave of heart would undertake.

It's was hard to tell where the road ended and the sky began with only the odd wisps of dried grass to guide me to stay between the ditches on either side of the road.  I appeared to be the only idiot vehicle on the road.

A journey that should have only taken 1 hour & 20 minutes took 2 1/2 hours; I made it to my destination shaken and exhausted but safe.  The realization that in a few short hours, I would have to turn around and head back to my home base on those same roads sat in the back of my mind.

Upon returning home 3 hours later than my anticipated ETA, it soon became apparent that I did not dress warm enough for my journey.  Like the frozen backs of these cows, I suspect my toes will take to March to thaw.

Predictions of more snow tonight.  Once again I will be venturing out on the road to travel tomorrow.  I will learn from today's experience and wear something warmer on my feet other than my beautiful new boots.

While looking fashionable is important, having toes is always in style.

Signing off.

A Month Of Downs and Ups

Goodbye November...you were:
  • The start of winter
  • One day of kindness
  • Too many long work days
  • A lovely spa and shopping get-a-way with Stanley
  • Too heavy for my mind, heart and soul
  • A fun Sunday morning tea visit with a sweet friend
  • The sadness of another dear friend's health
  • Finding the joy of putting my Christmas tree up

Wishing you a Saturday full of 'ups'!

Running Away Was My Only Choice

What does a gal do after a very long week
and she needs to run away?

She books hubby and herself into the
Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw, Sask

There's nothing like sitting in the 30c (102F) outside mineral pool
when the temperature is -28c (-18F) outside.

The she does a little retail therapy.
Although not a 'shoe' girl,
I couldn't resist these suede and leather boots
that were 50% off!
Truly they were calling my name.

And how about treating yourself to a new weighted hula-hoop
since your old one has seen better days.

Yup...that's what this girl did this weekend!

Thank you for all your concerns and kind words.
Not to worry - this girl will get back on track soon.

It's going to be another busy week
(3 days of business travel)
but I will be spending my
hotel evenings catching up with you all!

Love to you all!

What's Wrong With Me?

Usually by mid-October
(right after our Canadian Thanksgiving)
I am starting the count down to
putting up my Christmas tree.

For some reason this year
I have no enthusiasm or desire for it.

This is the first time in over 5 years
that I did not put my Christmas tree up
on this weekend of November.

Even my new Bearington Bear Iggy & Lou
that I bought in Banff this year
has not enticed me to decorate.

What's wrong with me?

No desire for gardening this summer.
No desire to put up a Christmas tree.

If I don't have it up soon
I won't bother putting it up.
It's too much work.
Too much effort.

I've been trying to get in the mood.
I've been listening to Christmas songs all week.
I have some new decorations.
I have snow.

What's wrong with me?

Maybe I just need a hug...

Cat's Log: Winter...Day 1

Cat's Log:

Earth Date November 16, 2013
Winter...Day 1

It's been snowing now for nearing almost 24 hours.  The crew and I have declared this as the official first day of winter for us.  There is currently a snowfall warning in effect for Southwest Saskatchewan with predictions of up to 15cm (6 in) of snow.  While the temperature is still a balmy -4c (25F), the snow is thick, heavy and wet.  The streets and sidewalks already slippery making for potential treacherous roads this evening.

There is not a spot outside that has not been covered in snow.  Garden trinkets that did not make the refuge of the shed will stay stranded until spring arrives.  They will be sacrificed as photo opportunities for the coming long cold months.

I shall be using 'Wire Kitty' to gauge the severity of snowfall for the winter season.  Already Wire Kitty's toes can not be seen and his eyes and whiskers are covered with the white frozen devil.

While Autumn graced us with a few extra weeks this year having had the first snow to stay October 23/12 last year, I am still hesitant in believing that this year's winter will end any earlier.

May Mother Nature please take mercy on our soul that she will not make us endure another long winter. The crew and I do not know if we can take it.

Signing off.

Purposeful Kindness

It seems almost ridiculous that we have to be reminded to be kind.
But reminded we are by
November 13th being World Kindness Day.

Perhaps it should be World Kindess Week...
World Kindess Month...
or what if we were kind all year???

Wouldn't the world be a wonderful place?

kind
adj. kind·erkind·est
1. Of a friendly, generous, or warm-hearted nature.
2. Showing sympathy or understanding; charitable: a kind word.
3. Humane; considerate: kind to animals.
4. Forbearing; tolerant: Our neighbor was very kind about the window we broke.
5. Generous; liberal: kind words of praise.
6. Agreeable; beneficial: a dry climate kind to asthmatics.

But sadly,
a reminder we all need every once-in-a-while.

We live in a world where kindess is an exception
and no longer a rule.
It seems much easier to be rude and thoughtless.

So tonight I go to sleep thinking kind thoughts
in hopes that tomorrow I am ready for a day
of purposeful kindness making a conscious effort
in being that which is defined as kind
to everyone I interact with for the whole day.

...

I will let you know how I make out.

Done With Thinking

sometimes I think that I think too hard
sometimes I think too small
sometimes I think of only one thought
sometimes I don't think at all

Looking forward to recharging the
ol' brain cells this weekend...

Have a Happy Friday!

And That's All I'm Saying About That

Quote from Sense and Sensibility:

Marianne: And as for you, you have no right, no right at all, to parade your ignorant assumptions...
Margaret: They're not assumptions, you told me.
Marianne: I told you nothing.
Margaret: They'll meet him when he comes, anyway.
Marianne: Margaret, that is not the point. You do not speak of such things before strangers.
Margaret: But everyone else was.
Marianne: Mrs Jennings is not everyone.
Margaret: I like her. She talks about things. We never talk about things.
Mrs. Dashwood: Hush, please. That is enough, Margaret. If you cannot think of anything appropriate to say, you will please restrict your remarks to the weather

Comments Off ~ as I am a Grumpy Cat today and do not have anything appropriate to say nor do I wish to talk about the weather...
