The Game of Life

Did you choose where you are living?
Did circumstances make the choice for you?
Are you living in the town of your birth?
Did the dice of life get rolled and that is where the game piece put you?

I'm living here in Swift Current Saskatchewan by choice.
Wayne and I moved to this city after we were married.
We stayed here overnight on our honeymoon (on our way to Alberta).
We liked it.
So we moved here.
No connections.
Not too much thought put into it.
We've lived here for 23 years.

I would move to Medicine Hat Alberta in two seconds.
I love that city.
Not just because it has a great big outdoor chess set (LOL!)
but because being there just feels right.
I've had an itch for a number of years now (no... not that kind of itch!)
and I can't get rid of it.

Do you every get that itch to just pick up and move?

That chess set is terrific!

Yes, my ex and I chose to move to this area, and while I like it, I have no particular tie to it. However, the only area that's ever "called" to me is Vermont (must be the mountains, akin to the area in Quebec in which I grew up...without the ever-present Separatist politics).

If Vermont were a province in Canada, I'd move in a heartbeat.

I moved where I did because my parents lived here and I had gone through a divorce. I needed to be near family. If I had my dream place it would be near a beach with white sand and blue water.

Ken and I live in the house we had built on the other half of our property, and have been here for 15 yrs. My dream though is a small Victorian or farm house further north. That's not going to happen, and I do love our little cape cod.

hubby chose to move to florida with his wife and kids in 1972. i chose to move here when i made a horrible mistake and had to run, i ran here because my mothers family was here. we chose to live in this house for 24 years together and love it. but we both have the itch to move to Ormond Beach on the other side of Florida. our plans were to do that in 06 when i retired, the economy kiced our house value to half of its worth so here we sit.

I chose to live in the U.S. but had no idea I was gonna settle in Georgia. I like here but sometimes want to go somewhere else. There is always issue though....job, money, relationship, etc.
The outdoor chess set looks quite cool!

I'm where I am by choice. I love living rural.

Go for it Catherine!

We chose to move 300 miles away from our families 10 years ago. We had stopped loving where we were - our home & jobs especially & desperately wanted a big change...

We are so glad we made the move. We are very happy & we live in a beautiful place, though it's tough being so far away from elderly parents...

Once our youngest leaves - we'll be off on another adventure... Life's too short!

Kay :)

Dearest Catherine,

You are so funny! Guess I've had that itch too, when we were living and working in Italy, near Venice. Georgia was on our mind; so we moved back!
Family we miss of course but for the rest, we're meant to be here. Never knew though we would end up here! The dice started rolling once we played with them.
Hugs and love to you,
Mariette

That is an awesome chess board.
I live in the same county that I was born in but about 30 miles away from where I grew up. I moved here with my first husband 24 years ago. I like it here but if I was given the right offer I would move but it would have to be in the country.
I've often daydreamed about packing up and moving and not telling anyone where I was going....lol

Catherine, I know the itch that you are talking about--It's the same one that brought us to Virginia. We had no friends or family here, but had lived here in 1986 when Carl was in the army and we loved it and wanted to come back and we did. I only found out a few years ago that my ancestors also lived in this same area and their house still stands in the county where I live, and I used to drive past it every day--I think it explained why I felt so connected to Virginia...

I've seen that kind of chess board before, but the pieces I recall were not as elegant as the ones you have pictured.

We chose where we are living. I was offered an exciting job, and wanted to move to this city anyhow. It is a thousand miles or so from the city of my birth, to which I would not happily return.

If you don't like Swift Current, have you tried Saskatoon?

Eileen said...

Back in '86 I got transferred here by my then employer. It certainly wasn't my choice - I wanted to stay north of the tree line (in Saskatchewan) both to be close to my family and because I love the north.

Despite my initial fears being here turned out to be the best move I could have made. I had my son, I went to university, I have a job I love, and I've had opportunities that would never had ocurred if I had stayed in my home town.

Yet, I can forsee a move in my future at some point, likely when I retire. I'd like to live where there is less snow with a more temperate climate. Who knows it may just happen!

Hope you get your opportunity to live in MH. It's a pretty neat community from what I've seen in my brief visits there.

We are not happy where we live. I mean, we have made lots of friends, but it is not a pretty place--or a cheap place by any means. We hope to retire someplace we WANT to live, but kids and careers keep us here for now.

That chess board is very cool.

We are here by choice. A position in the company my hubby works for came open here and we liked the area so much he transferred. That was almost 11 years ago.

We met in Alaska, moved to Oregon, then California, back to Oregon and now Washington. We probably won't move but if we did I would love to get back to the Oregon coast.

Medicine Hat ... now that's a different name. I never dreamed in a million years I would be where I'm at. Do I like it ... no! But it is what it is and I've been here 17-1/2 years. It's afforded me opportunities for travel which have been wonderful. I really have no ties to any one place in the States and don't really know where I would want to be. Hubby says we are retiring to Sri Lanka. Never know what life has in store. Have a great weekend. Tammy

Yes, Catherine, sometimes I want to move to Provence in France ...
but I'm really happy here :-)
Have a great weekend,

My mom, dad and I did just that almost two years ago, coming down here to North Carolina from Massachusetts (with a few bumps in the road in between), and we couldn't be happier. Just go for it, we say!

I love to move, for me the grass is always greener somewhere else. For now I live on a lake with the beach five minutes walk away. My preferred location? London of course near The Palace...

For the record, I don't like moving. strongly dislike.
But I LOVE to travel! There are so many places I'd love to go. but I do love being home as well.
I had to look up where you live because I'll be traveling to Canada very soon. My husband and I are visiting Banff and Jasper soon. can't wait.
To answer your questions:
No,I don't live near where I grew up. After college I traveled west to visit a friend and decided to move there. I met my husband and then a few years later we moved to our current city because of his job. I do like it here perhaps especially because I have long time friends and some family not too far away.

Love that chess set!

No urge to move here--well maybe to the refrigerator and back. We are spoiled by the weather here.

I was so surprised when I read your post! It has been a while I've been thinking about living abroad again, obviously it is something I will have to plan carefully, and it won't happen overnight. There's something saying to me that in a near future I must leave, you know what I mean...
I'll tell you when it happens.
Have a wonderful weekend Catherine! :)

So who won the chess game? :)

We love it here in Oregon but we're an hour inland so would move to the coast in a heartbeat if I could. I've been checking out the real estate for months and might just get a vacation home over there so I'll be one step closer!

Love the chess set!
I ended up in Orlando because my parents moved us to Florida when i was three. I was born in North Carolina and I have the itch to move back. Every time we visit family or the mountains we want to move there. I think we will be making it happen within a year. I just love the mountains, coast and the people in North Carolina. :) Are you going to follow your itch?

ALL THE TIME, I always have wanted to live in Saskatoon, I don't know why. I love moving, I love packing, unpacking and trying something new. They also have a chess board at Clear Lake, I'll play you a game on the Sept. long weekend?

I'd love to move near to the ocean...any ocean. I miss the smell of salt water.

I'm here in a senior community, by choice and closer to my children. It's convenient to everything, including the hospital.

Yes indeed! That's how we ended up across the province a couple of months ago. Just decided to pack up and leave, just because we wanted to :)
I love that chess set, too, by the way. That would be so much fun to play. Looks like your boys are enjoying themselves! :)

A popular topic -- the farm is somewhat of our dream home... but I have never really lived anywhere but Nebraska and I sometimes feel I'm missing something. But my family lives here, so it's a trade-off.
