It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.....

Nothing says 'summer's over'
like receiving the
Sears Christmas Wish Book
in your mail box...

There was a time when receiving this
highly anticipated book of delight
was the start of spending many
happy and wonderful hours
paging through the toy section
in particular the Barbie pages

hoping
wishing
dreaming

that I would receive my
heart's desire
for Christmas.

Now it's just a dreaded reminder
that summer does not last
and that by not cancelling this catalogue
I am aiding in the destruction of the environment.

I guess somewhere deep inside
there's still a part of me
that enjoys flipping through
the toy section
and reminiscing
about all the joyful hours I spent
playing with my Barbies
and truly amazed
that for a small fortune
I could today own the
'Barbie Glam Vacation Jet Plane'...
page 732... ;)

I remember dreaming with the Sears catalog, just like you describe. I recall wanting a metal barn and plastic animals set, and receiving it for Christmas. Yay.

I just went to the mail today and there it was, my card for the Sears catalogue to be picked up at the local grocery store. I thought of throwing the card out, but like you, I like to flip the pages, and dream. But it sure was a kick in the pants when on the hottest day of the year, I see the Christmas Catalogue card in my box.

Hi Catherine... I remember, as a little girl, how I loved to look through the Sears Wish List Christmas Catalog. I'd make lists and lists --and then whittle them down --trying to find just the perfect gifts... So much fun--and so many memories.
Hugs,
Betsy

I used to go through the Sears and Penney's catalogs every Christmas! I think I wore the pages out I went through them so much! August is a little early to be receiving it though! I don't think those catalogs are available in the US anymore or at least I haven't seen them.

I love that heart photo!

Dearest Catherine,

Indeed, we remain always a child, deep inside, with all our dreams. But we hate to be reminded that summer ends so abruptly... Guess that instead of wanting a Barbie we now want to hold on to the season with sunshine in our lives!

Love to you,

Mariette

I've heard about the Sears catalogue, never seen one but it does sound exciting. Just a bit early and I hope I don't see any decorations in the shops yet.
Just remembered, there were tins of shortbread in the supermarket yesterday. A clue that something is happening in 4months XX

I got mine last week, Thursday or Friday. Gees, can't they at least wait till after Labour Day?

However, I did see some cute (overpriced) kitty stuff. LOL.

Remember the old Eaton's catalogue? Growing up in such an isolated area (Gaspé, QC), we didn't have access to much in the way of retail choice. So the Eaton's and Sears Christmas catalogues were so much fun to look through!

When we lived overseas, the only way to get toys was to order them from the Sears catalog. We got to pick out one thing each Christmas from it and put it in our letter to Santa. Nice memories. :)

I still believe that Christmas advertising should wait until after Halloween! My parents never subscribed to the Sears Catalog, so maybe I'm just a spoilsport!

I worked in the sears telephone catalog back in the late 60's and the best time of the year was that Christmas catalog. have not seen one in about 30 years now, did not know they still do one. my boys are 44 and 46 and I used to come home with 2 catalogs and tell them how much money they could spend for Christmas, they spent months marking that catalog, and making lists. of course they always went over so it was a surprise what they got, they wanted almost every toy in the book.

Hey, I better find out where my Christmas tree is, it must be time to put it up!

Oh The Wish Book was always so important at my house. I loved it when I was young and then my girls always had hours and hours of dreaming of what 'Santa' would bring them. Thanks for the memories. I didn't know they still published this catalog!

I can remember many evenings spent flipping through the sears catalog trying to decide what I wanted. I always wanted it all :)
I can't believe it's out already. It's so soon. Why do they have to rush it so much

Jen said...

Well now I wasn't so much on the Barbies (except as riders ;o) I was all about the horse toys and models that they used to have in there waaaaay back when.

and the Christmas season will be starting with stores decorating in a few weeks. I like the catalogue thing better. As my garden catalogues make me think spring when they arrive in December... :)

When I saw the catalogue at my front door I had the idea to post about it. My kids would pour over that book when they were little. I will probably never look at it as stores are near by. V
