Saying Good-Bye to Old Friends

I love books
I love collecting books
Ever since my first collection of
Nancy Drew books (hard cover)
when I was a young girl
I've had an obsession with books

I love the feel of them
I love the smell of them
I love to look at them all
lined up neatly on my book shelves

"Books are our friends!" is my thought
That is why you will find my books in perfect condition
No bent pages
No binding cracks
They are just like new

But as time goes on
my book shelves become overcrowded
and I have to say good-bye to my old friends

Good-bye to all the characters I loved from
Jodi Picoult, Joy Fielding, Sophie Kinsella,
Beth Harbision, Marian Keyes, Jane Fallon

I did not keep you all
with the intention of reading you again
I kept you as my obsession runs deep
to project you from the harshness of the world
of those readers who bend you in half
'dog ear' your pages rather then use a bookmark
drop you in the bathwater
spill their coffee on you

As I drop you off at the SPCA book store today
know that my good care of you was not in vein
for with your 'like new' condition
you will be chosen first off the shelves

While I can not promise you
that your next owner will be as kind as I
just remember
as your back is breaking from being opened in half
the money the SPCA makes from you
will be going to help homeless animals

So good-bye old friends
and remember
I loved you well...

That really is a great idea, we need to clean out our bookshelves too, there would be room for us to lay around there!

Oh, I totally understand! It is so hard to let go of these old friends. They are getting out there though--making other people happy!

Love this post, Catherine! I can't bear to part with my books but they do take over your space.
it's great that the animals are going to benefit, though :)

I just love reading.. But like you I have so many right now. I don't want to part with yet. So lately I have been getting my books at the library.. Or I alway barrow some from my MoM. She has so many books..

What a wonderful reason to make some space on your shelf.. That is so sweet of you!

Hope you have a happy week!

That's a great place to donate!! All of my old knitting yarn goes to various animal societies and volunteers knit blankets for the animals.

I know it's hard to part, but the money earned by SPCA is priceless! Thanks for helping out with your precious collection Catherine.

What a wonderful charity! I would probably be tempted to donate a lot of my books for a reason like that, other wise, they just keep piling up and I never want to get rid of them. :-)

Hi Catherine!
I truly enjoyed this post....even though it was bittersweet really!

I too have had a book obsession in the past...but ever since purchasing a KOBO ereader..I no longer have to have and then part with 'too many novels'....

I do however still have too many art books....but that's a whole different story! lol

you have done a great thing.

ciao bella!

Hi Catherine, It is hard to get rid of books.. They are just part of us... I collected the Bobbsey Twins books when I was young... Finally got rid of them --along with many others... I grieved for awhile when I did it..... BUT--they do take up room!!!!

Sniff. Sniff. But they will all be going to good homes! :) Hooray! I love a happy ending.

Great post -- I love that you are doing this. And I also had the best collection of hardcover Nancy Drew books. I adored them!

I know exactly how you feel! But the animals sure can use the help.
Bless you!

I've been decluttering too! Good for you for donating them there...

I am very impressed with your neat books! I used to collect them, but as I never read a book twice (too many books....not enough time!) so they were off to the charity shop, too.

What a great way to helps SPCA. You books are going on to new owners for a very worthwhile charity.

I'm the same way with books ever since my Nancy Drew books too! I would love to go to the SPCA to buy your books and help the anmials!

Dear Catherine, I, too, hold on to books with a passion no one in my family "really" understands. Your gesture serves as an example. My shelves are overflowing...thank you for pointing the way...Hugs!

I pass on a lot of books to friends, my mum or the charity shop as I haven't got alot of storage space. I do like a crisp new book from the bookshop so the books I pass on are in good condition.

It's always hard to part with things, isn't it? It's for a good cause though :D

Hopefully the next owners will be conscientious.

Me too! Me Too! My name is Jen, and I'm addicted to books...Ha.
I tend to read mine over and over again (especially the horse ones *grin*). Clever idea though, for raising funds (and yay SPCA ;o)

I can understand your feelings. Indeed, it is not easy to separate of those treasure. Your decision to let others to read something from your collection as well as to help homeless animals is really a good deed.

This is funny. I collect books too...rarely with the intention to read them again (there's just so many I want to read!) so....why? Why do I buy them? Why don't I just borrow them from the library? Why do I just have to have them?
Actually I am reading a library book right now...and someone who had it before me must have stepped on's a hard cover...the binding is broken, and it sits kind of sideways now, which really does break my I know how you feel, I really do! But yes....for the animals...that is wonderful.
