Calgary Zoo

A trip to Calgary is never complete
without a trip to the Zoo!
There were some new sites this year
including this strange looking bird...
The Dinosaur attraction had some added animatronics.
Notice the dinosaur moving...
while it scared the bejeebies out of me...
the boys? No reaction.
Honestly.
I took about 15 photos of this T-Rex moving and
the boys are in exactly the same pose in each one.
Odd...
One of my favorites to visit is the butterfly conservatory.
The heat and steam hits you like
a brick wall the moment you walk in.
The lenses on my glasses and my camera fogged up.
Once the lens cleared
the beautify of the butterflies flying around and
if you are lucky enough,
landing on you,
is truly an experience of inner tranquility.

We had to go outside to cool off
and have a relax.
For a moment I thought we had a celebrity siting.
Clint Eastwood?
Nope ~ just Stanley.
Another one of my favorites are the owls.
So beautiful!
While I love visiting all the animals at the zoo
(well... perhaps not the reptiles),
the big cats are truly my favorite.
But yet, they are the ones that leave me the most sad.
These majestic animals were not meant to be caged.
The area that they have to move in is minimal.
While I appreciate seeing these beautiful creatures up close,
it breaks my heart every time I see them.
What are you thinking of
sweet beast?
On a happier note,
I think we found where the Who's from Whoville live!
So many of the flowers at the zoo
were still in full bloom.
Leaves were ablaze
with color.
And flowers were
on fire.

There are so many wonderful things to see at the zoo.

I hope you are experiencing some
wonder and beauty in your world this week!

I feel the same about the animals...so nice to see them, but sad that they are confined. Your butterfly and flower shots are outstanding! It sounds like a great day.

The butterflies are beautiful, and the markings on that first one are unlike any I've seen before! I also love the blue one. The tiger in your photo looks like I could just go right up to him and pet him. ha. They are so cute like that.

Ah, such lovely photos as usual.

I'm with you on the animals in cages. Seems so unfair, doesn't it?? And to think my Hobbes goes nuts when we don't let him outside. Sigh.

LOVE the butterflies! Isn't it something when they sit on you? I have those wacky Admirals that do that in MY backyard!!!

Glad you had a great time--in spite of that silly-looking penguin! ;)

Wow---I love your Clint Eastwood!!!!!!! Looks like the three of you all had a fabulous time at the zoo... The flowers are so pretty ---and of course, everyone loves the animals (even though they are confined).

Thanks for sharing...

Betsy

Your trip to the zoo looked like a lot of fun and your photos are beautiful! I, too, love seeing the big cats but always feel sorry for them in the cages. I hope to have the opportunity to see them in the wild one day. Thanks for sharing your day with us!

Looks an interesting zoo and yes it is sad to see the big cats caged. I always feel sorry for elephants too and will no longer go to see a circus where there are animals. Not sure but the pretty blue butterfly looks like a Ulysses from North Queensland. XX

What a great zoo. We have one not to far from us but it's nothing like this one. Your photos are wonderful. Such pretty butterflies and the big cats are awesome. I do feel for them being caged though.

We were going to mention that the blue butterfly looks like a Ulysses too! We used to have them in our yard sometimes when we lived in Townsville, they were so beautiful.

The only zoo mum has been to where she didn't feel sad for the animals was Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo. If I was an animal, she'd want to live in that zoo!

I too am right there with you on your thoughts on the big cats. I love to see them, but it does always leave me feeling a little sad.

I love the big cats too... and feel sorry they have to be caged..but, honestly? ...the way this world is going there soon won't be any wild animals left to see. The only live ones will be in a zoo... it's a good thing somebody is trying to save one or two here and there.

I feel rather honoured to say that I was standing close enough to a Siberian( in the very same zoo) to be .. ahem... "sprayed" by him. It was New Year's and they light the zoo up ... there are way too many people there..I was standing right in front of the crowd and couldn't move fast enough to get out of the way. Joe and I stunk like funky popcorn for the rest of the night... my husband and his wife somehow managed to get out of the way. Joe and I got a lot of mileage out of that story.... and occasionally we still brag it up... peed on by a Siberian tiger....

What a great time you've had with your boys! The pictures are wonderful.
I feel the same about big cats in captivity- I know they are looked after well but it breaks my heart to see them cooped up.

I visited the Calgary Zoo a couple of years ago in the summer. The big cats were all dozing in the heat. I wondered what they were thinking too.

The picture of funny looking penguin made me lough!
I feel sad, too, when I think these animals are confined in a small space...I hope they are happy with good food every day...

Hi Cat, i also have a friend here named as yours, and on FB at night we joked always. Last night we were both hungry, and she said she can eat a 'mouse'. Then i said i can eat a 'banana', where she said maybe cats and monkeys really are hungry! hahaha! And...your photos are so beautiful, esp those butterflies. I love them.
