Last Day of May

What's there to say
On the very last day
Of my short holiday
While the month of May
Has slipped away
{oh suck it up and quit writing bad poetry}

Last Day of Staycation I am...savoring my last few hours of my Staycation*. Back to work on Monday I go. I have been enjoying my last few mornings this week, sitting on my patio, drinking a cup of tea, watching the 'goings on' in my garden. It's been a wonderful two weeks of doing nothing!

*Staycation - from Saskatchewan's own award winning TV series "Corner Gas" - when you take a vacation, but don't leave home!

Banjo's Birthday

It's Banjo's birthday today. He's 8. Though he was born on April 14, 2001, I count the day he came to live with us, May 27, 2001 as his birthday. He was just an ordinary barn cat that would have ended up at the SPCA if we hadn't taken him. He doesn't have any papers showing his pedigree but he's still very special to us!

He's gone from a husky 30 lbs to a svelte 21 lbs in a year thanks to a high protein diet of less than 1/2 cup of food a day. {I think he weighs a bit less than 21 lbs now, I haven't taken him to the vet to get weighed lately.}

He was a normal sized cat when he was little but grew to 18 lbs by the time he was one years old. He was almost a caramel color with black tips when he was little. Cute!

He has brought us much joy over the last 8 years {as well as some crazy vet bills - but that's ok - I don't mind - he's worth it} and has taught us many things:
  1. There's always time for a nap in the last patch of sunbeam of the day - even if it's right in the middle of the kitchen floor while someone is trying to make dinner.
  2. If you are hungry, keep meowing loudly, especially in the wee hours of the morning, someone will eventually feed you.
  3. If you are lonely, keep meowing loudly, especially in the wee hours of the morning, someone will eventually pet you.
  4. The more you ignore someone, the more they want your company.
  5. If someone is mad at you, open your eyes wide and start purring.
  6. If you are tired, take a nap.
  7. If you are bored, take a nap.
  8. If you are lazy, take a nap.
  9. Ignore the expensive toys, a card board box or a piece of string always makes for more fun.
  10. Always use the litter box the minute it's been cleaned out.
  11. If you try hard enough, you can fit into the tiniest space to hide from everyone.
  12. The best area to sleep on a bed is in the middle half.

And with that ~

Happy Birthday Banjo!

I hope to have many more years of learning from you!

Carol & Ted - Part 2

After watching Carol line the nest for most of the day,
Ted decides to lend a helping hand...err...wing.
He takes a nearby piece of string and starts
to pull it into their little house.
It's a pretty big job, as it is a pretty long piece of string.
He gets it half way in and decides to take a little rest.He eyes his 'handyman work' for a moment
and very impressed with himself he calls up to Carol.
"How's it look there sweet cheeks? Pretty good?"
Carol looks down at their home.
" think you could pull
the whole piece of string into the nest?"
Ted jumps into the nest.
Looks around for a bit and replies to Carol,
"I'm thinking this is good enough."

Carol sighs as she looks down at their home.
What will the neighbors think?
Ted flies back to the top of the garden arbor for a rest while
Carol hides her head in embarrassment.

And as any good woman will do,
Carol goes and finishes the job herself!
You go girl!

Joyful Finch

Oh how I could watch the finch all day
I had 17 of them at the feeder yesterday
{and me outside without my camera}
I went back into the house to get it
And after sitting on my swing for a few moments
A couple of them were brave enough
To come back
They were about 3 ft away from me
{or is that Tweet!}

If we could bottle it...

I am very lazy when it comes to exercising. I hate it. I always have. But it was so beautiful out this evening that my love and I {that would be Wayne...not Colin...} went for a brisk walk for almost an hour. I wish you could bottle how you feel after a nice long walk. The endorphins get you that natural 'high' and you feel so good. I get the same high from a good laugh. Sadly though, laughing my a** off doesn't get me fitting into my summer clothes...! So because of that, I have been trying to eat healthier and get some exercise in when I can. Now don't be too impressed - I'm only on day 2 of eating and exercising. :-(

Sigh...if only laughing could help us lose weight. I am sure I would weigh a mere 100 lbs as I do tend to laugh lots in a day.

Banjo's Bum Hip

Upon smelling a new bag of cat food,
Banjo takes a leap up onto the kitchen counter.
{I am thinking my Banjo sometimes 'plays' us with his 'bum hip'!}

Bum hip indeed....

Carol & Ted - Part 1

After spending a few days scouting the neighborhood,
Carol and Ted decide that this little piece of heaven
is just the right spot to set up their home and begin a family.
For the next couple of days, Carol tirelessly
sets out to find the nicest twigs and bits of fluff
to line their new home to make ready for her eggs.
While Carol busies herself with setting things up,
Ted appears to be doing not too much of anything....
hmmm......I'm wondering how long this relationship will last
if Ted doesn't start helping out a bit with the house work?

Words For Thought

A Sad Day

Sometimes there are no words to express your thoughts when you hear of someone dieing. I received two phone calls this morning about two people passing away. One due to complications from a lengthy illness, another from a an unexpected tragedy. One was 50, one was 18. My heart goes out to both of their families today. I know that life will never again be the same for them. These sad happenings remind me to:
~ grab onto every moment of life
~ don't take anything or anyone for granted
~ love your family and friends everyday
~ remember that the little 'crap' really doesn't matter
Nothing that we don't already know. Just things we need reminding of sometimes.

Am I a nerd? Or am I the new cool?

Spotting and taking a photo of a bird that I have never taken a picture of before
such as this Pine Siskin
and these Bohemian Waxwings

and then finding them in my "Saskatchewan Birds" book, printing them off and adding them to my "Birds of Saskatchewan" photo album

brings out the Jane Hathaway* in me!

Does that make me a nerd? Or am I just 'retro' so hence, very 'in' and 'cool'? Ummm...maybe don't answer that. I will just take it for what it is. I'm simply a gal who likes her birds....!

Gardening Inspiration

A trip to "Dutch Growers" always starts my gardening time off just right! I didn't spend as much time there as I would have liked {my boys, waiting patiently in the car}. A person could spend hours in there as there is so much to look at. Not only flowers, plants and the like, but gift items, jewelry, clothing, purses, {PURSES!!!}, a quaint coffee house...oh and the list goes on. But I wanted in particular "Sun Kissed" Orange Gazania's and I also picked up a beautiful pot of Yellow Gerber Daisy's. I am looking forward to getting out into my garden now!

Sometimes, a person just needs a little inspiration to get the motivation!

An Enjoyable Friday Indeed

On May 19, 2009 I will have been in the credit union system for 25 years. 25 years! Where on Earth did that time go? How old does that make me sound? {As I started at 14 years of age, not too old really....ahhh....yeah....14 years old....about there.} As mentioned below, I am on holidays next week so it would appear that some little elves worked late last night to decorate my office! We had lots of food all day and I received many congratulations.

I have 'survived' many changes working in the financial institution over the 25 years, including:
  • 6 different credit unions
  • 5 different banking systems
  • 2 mergers
  • numerous amalgamations
  • loan rates from 2% to 27%
  • positions of: teller, loans steno, edp coordinator, file clerk, member service representative, accounting clerk, administration clerk, training and development officer, human resource analyst, recruitment and development specialist
  • 5 different offices in the same building in less then 4 years

Though my true 'dream' job would be working with animals, being an author, something more creative, I couldn't imagine working anywhere else than at the credit union. Especially in human resources. I think it was where I was meant to be. {Excuse me while I 'fly my flag'! Ha, ha!}

Next stop...retirement! { I am MUCH too young for that yet!!!}

A Most Enjoyable Friday

I'm so happy I rescued my 2 stray tulips from the snow and the freezing cold the other day. I have been enjoying them all week. I am especially happy today for the reason that as of 5 pm today, I am on 2 weeks holidays! While I do have a long list of "to do's" for the next few weeks, I do plan on enjoying the little things as well. For example:

On Nice Warm Days (assuming it will ever warm up again):

  • drinking tea out on my patio every morning
  • gliding on my glider patio chair bought last year
  • listening and watching the birds
  • taking some pictures of spring arriving...and staying
  • getting my pots ready for planting new flowers

On Cold Gloomy Days:

  • laying in bed for a bit longer in the morning
  • watching ellen and drinking tea
  • watching movies and crafting
  • catching up on reading my magazine subscriptions
  • middle of the afternoon snoozies

I hope you have a most enjoyable day - I plan to! ;-)
